It sounds ridiculous, right? Why would you block yourself from earning more money? Why would you stop yourself from spending money if you love to spend money? Yet these money blocks show up for all of us in business – they’re the mindset issues that get in the way of money flowing in or out in the ways we actually want.
In my latest Get Financially Fit podcast episode, I share how money blocks might be affecting your business profitability and what you can do about them.
What Are Money Blocks and How Do They Show Up?
Money blocks are the ways your mindset shows up to block the flow of money – whether that’s making more money, saving more money, investing more money, or spending more money. It’s something getting in the way of what you think you want to do.
As a qualified accountant who grew up budgeting and understanding money, even I’ve had real blocks. Mine were around controlling money, holding onto it as a security blanket, which made spending quite difficult. I know for a lot of people that sounds bizarre!
Common ways money blocks might be appearing in your business include:
- Not having an offer out there – I experienced this recently when I let too many voices in and couldn’t work out how I best wanted to work with people
- Forgetting you’re running a business – constantly saying “I just want to help people” without creating paid pathways
- Not following up with potential clients – people may have other things going on in their lives, so follow-up is crucial
- Giving out loads of free meetings without clear boundaries
- Not making it easy for people to pay you – are your systems efficient with good invoicing and payment links?
My Own Journey With Money Blocks
In the podcast, I share how September was my best revenue month, but October saw little new income. Rather than panicking, in November I chose to trust myself and focus on impact – speaking on stage, in masterclasses, on podcasts, and launching my own podcast.
By giving myself time and space and trusting that clarity would come, I attracted an unexpected opportunity to deliver a masterclass for a gambling charity – allowing me to speak about money with people who have completely different money mindsets.
Practical Steps to Overcome Money Blocks
Beyond working on your mindset (which is constantly evolving), there are practical things you can do:
- Remember you’re running a business – your free content (podcasts, newsletters, social media) helps those who can’t afford you, but you need paid offers to sustain your business
- Set up efficient systems – like the Xero and Chaser invoice system I set up for a client
- Make it easy for people to pay – just like my son’s school using Apple Pay instead of cash
- Clear physical clutter representing old thinking – I recently cleared out revision sheets from my 2010 CIMA qualification that I’d been moving from house to house
- Remove outdated offers – What if someone signs up to that offer that doesn’t align with who you are anymore?
- Review your pricing strategy – Have you increased prices to account for inflation? Have you told your clients?
Check Your Reactions to Financial Growth
Notice how you feel when I mention different revenue goals – 50K, 100K, 200K, or even a million-pound year. How does it feel when I suggest “you’ve smashed through the VAT registration threshold and now your profit is so high you’ve got to pay 25% corporation tax”?
These reactions often reveal underlying blocks that might be causing you to stall in 2025.
A Real Example: Pricing Alignment
One of my clients had a one-session price and a four-session price. When we looked closer, we realized his one-session price times four was actually less than his four-session package – yet the one session involved more work! We had to rejuggle that pricing and understand the mindset around why he’d kept it that way.
